Nerja

Nerja is located 50 km east of Malaga, approximately 45 minutes drive from the airport.

Flanked by the Sierra Almijara mountains, Nerja has managed to avoid much of the tower block developments of the tourist boom and has retained much of it’s original character, with narrow streets and whitewashed houses.

At the heart of Nerja is the Balcon de Europa, with it’s palm fringed promenade, where you can enjoy panoramic views of the Mediterranean. In the centre of town, there are a wide choice of shops, restaurants and bars, focused around the plaza in the old part of the town. During the summer months, street entertainers and painters congregate in the Plaza in the evenings creating a great holiday atmosphere.

Nerja has many beautiful beaches, offering a range of water sports, cafes and restaurants. Burriana is the largest beach and is known for it’s beach restaurants cooking fresh paella and fish on open fires.

For those looking for night life, the majority of discos and bars with live music, are to the west of the centre in Tutti Frutti square.

The spectacular caves at nearby Maro were discovered in 1957, and have become a popular tourist attraction. The caves contain the largest stalacite in the world, and are made up of several enormous natural caverns. Remains have been discovered from the Paleolithic and Neolithic ages stretching back some 20,000 years.

Frigiliana
Frigiliana is situated 6km inland from Nerja on the lower slopes of the Monte El Fuerte and is a beautiful village with white washed houses and steep cobbled streets, overlooking the sea. The old part of Frigiliana is a maze of small streets, with a selection of shops selling local produce and ceramics, restaurants and bars. This village was the sight of the final defeat of the Moors in the Axarquia, and the Moorish influence can be seen throughout the village today.

Torrox
Torrox village is located 4km inland and is a typical white Andalucian village, with bars and restaurants located around the main square. During the moorish period, the village played an important role in the silk trade between Granada and cities such as Damascus and Baghdad.

The pretty central square is flanked by several tapas bars and restaurants.

Torrox Costa
The coastal part of Torrox, known as Torrox Costa, has a long beach and promenade, with plenty of bars and restaurants. This part of the Eastern Costa Del Sol tends to be less busy than it’s better known neighbours.

Competa
Competa is set high up in the mountains at 700 metres above sea level, and is popular with walkers. Infamous for it’s locally produced sweet wine, Competa is a great location to wander through the narrow streets and browse in the shops which sell a range of ceramics, local produce and gifts. The bars and restaurants in and around the central plaza, are a great place to sample local food for lunch or an evening meal.
